Why narcan (naloxone) classes?
Preventable drug overdose deaths have been on the rise not only in Carroll County, but also nation wide. Opioids are the top cause of death from drug overdose. This course is being taught in efforts to raise awareness and provide a tool for prevention.
Who should attend?
Community members interested in overdose prevention are invited to attend. If you are concerned that you or a loved one is at risk for overdosing on heroin or prescription pain medication, this training is for you.
What is naloxone?
It is a prescription medicine that reverses an opioid overdose. It can not be used to get high and is not addictive. Naloxone is safe and effective; emergency medical professionals have used it for decades.
The two-hour course will cover topics such as:
What are opioids?
How to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose?
How to administer intra-nasal naloxone?
What rights and responsibilities does a trained individual have?
What resources are available for family members, friends and loved ones?
How does naloxone help?
Opioids can slow or stop a person’s breathing, which causes death. Naloxone can help reverse an opioid overdose. An overdose death may happen in minutes or hours after opioid use. If a bystander acts when they notice a person who has used opioids and shows signs of an overdose, there is time to call 911, start rescue breathing (if needed) and administer naloxone.
Classes held on the *3rd Wednesday of each month.
